King Shantanu falls in love with Satyavati, a fisherwoman. Her father agrees to the marriage only if Satyavati's son inherits the throne. To secure his father's happiness, Devavrat takes a terrible, life-altering oath of celibacy (Brahmacharya), renouncing the throne and fathering children forever.
