After signing with Roadrunner Records, Trivium released their second album, Ascendancy , on March 15, 2005. After the mixed reception of The Crusade , Trivium returned with what many fans and critics consider their absolute masterpiece, Shogun . Released between September 23 and October 1, 2008, the album was produced by renowned rock/metal producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice in Chains). It marked a triumphant return to a heavier, more progressive and technically complex sound, blending thrash, melodic death metal, and intricate songwriting.

Produced by David Draiman (Disturbed), this is Trivium’s most controversial album. Draiman sanded off the hardcore edges and pushed Matt Heafy into a more melodic, rhythmic vocal style. The result sounds like Disturbed playing Trivium songs. Fans were split; the riffs are massive, but the vocal delivery feels homogenized.

While tracks like "Entrance of the Conflagration," "Anthem (We Are the Fire)," and the progressive, instrumental title track showcased jaw-dropping musicianship, the sudden stylistic shift alienated a portion of their core fanbase.
